Bold Bald Eagle

Choosing a subject to paint is hard but will become easier as you gain more experience. I am base in South Wales of the United kingdom so I searched the internet for my subjects and selected this photo of a Bald Eagle. I reversed and tilted the image a bit, this give him a bold look.

Bold Bald Eagle

I'm having some difficulty trying to capture the bold look. After a few attempts I'm OK with this one, but not quite happy. I think I'll capture  more in later stages. First time painting a Bald Eagle, should be fun.

I decide to put the dark background in first then add some detail to the head eye and beak. I'm getting there but still not quite happy. This photo of stage two has the beak too yellow but the colour on the painting is much lighter. I'll leave it to dry for a day or two.

With the painting dry I cover the head with a thin layer of liquid clear and dry brush most of the liquid clear off, this allows my brush strokes to slide smoother. I brush the shadow areas with grey blues & grey greens. The finer detail later will now show up better.

With the shadows area still wet I add the white feather. I detail the beak, I decide to add interest to the left side with a hint of yellow. After putting liquid clear on the bottom feathers I add dark thin mix of black & brown. Now I work in the feather bellow using the same yellow for the side of the face the yellow blend in with the dark. I put in the same dark colour for the background. Now I feel I'm getting there.

With my interest heightened, I work over the white feather a bit more and add the eye detail. Everything is working for this painting. I finish off with a signing and thump print. Hope you enjoyed the demo, have a go yourself.
