Golden Eagle
What a beautiful photo of a Golden Eagle. Love to paint him. I've started a portrait of this Golden Eagle in oils. Please feel free to follow the progress.

Scruff Bald Eagle What a lovely character, so scruffy. I'll really enjoy this painting. His messy feathers with hints of green, blues and yellows. His bent crooked beak and inward tilted eye. |

First I make sore I capture his look. As you can see I've had several attempts at getting his beak and neck right. I use a mix of white with a touch of blue then a green/white and a mid grey.

![]() I finish off the feather area's adding different tones of colour. I add the beak and eye using a yellow tone.
|

![]() Adding some more detail to the feathers and beak I decide to put the dark back ground in.

Now I can see the effect of colour with the contrast of a dark background. I'll leave him to dry before I start the fine detail work.
|
Scruff is starting to look great, I'm using the hints of blues, yellows and greens mostly in a slight grey tone. The flow of the feather detail is messy but in a controlled direction. I detail the inward tilted eye a bit more to that later.

![]() Continuing with the feather detail I add a hint of light orange and blue to the neck area and paint the white feathers over them. Now I paint the background with black, while the black background is still wet I put a slight hint of the blue, green, yellow and orange into it, you cant quite see these colour but they help the black backdrop feel deep rather than flat.
|
![]() Now the background is dry I work on the small detail to the feathers with short and long brush strokes. I work on the beak now with a hint of orange into the yellow. Scruff is looking cute.

![]() Not much left to do here I add the eye detail and work a bit more on the feathers. You could go on and on with detail but I felt I've reach as good as I'm going to get with Scruff. This photo of the painting was taken during daylight so is a true representation of the colours used. View sale price Arty fun 2 all. Gary
